Concrete Expression: Art and Identity in Urban Public Spaces
About Concrete Expression
Concrete Expression is an interactive photo gallery website, paired with an e-photobook. This project examines intersectionality such as access to institutional spaces for art, claiming space to be seen, the “high” and “low” debate, legalities, and more.
Graffiti is perfect to investigate this because of low barrier to entry, connection to deep social issues, and claim of physical spaces (illegally). Why do we value some art and not others? Who decides where art can and cannot go?

Interactive Map Feature
The interactive map allows users to click through the city, see pictures of graffiti, read writeups about them, and hear audio from their locations.
This feature is meant to archive the constantly moving and transforming art pieces the city has to offer, while preserving authenticity and meaning.
Social Media
You can share this project with friends on Instagram via the official page! All of your favorite pictures from the map and e-book are free to repost and engage with; let me know what you think or suggest improvements.
